What is WATER-JEL?
WATER-JEL is a water based, water-soluble gel that draws the heat out of a
burn while it relieves the pain, cools the skin, and protects against airborne
contamination. By applying WATER-JEL as soon as possible, burn progression
may be slowed.
What is the active ingredient in WATER-JEL Sterile
Burn Dressings and Fire Blankets?
WATER-JEL Sterile Burn Dressings and Fire Blankets are considered class I Medical
Devices and therefore have no active ingredient.
What is the active ingredient in WATER-JEL topical gels?
Burn Jel and UnBurn both contain the common anesthetic lidocaine, and are therefore
classified as over-the-counter drugs. Lidocaine can be found in many topical
pain relievers sold in pharmacies throughout the United States. Cool Jel consists
of the same gel formula used in Burn Jel and UnBurn, but contains no active
ingredient. Burn Jel contains 2% lidocaine, and UnBurn contains 2.5%.
When
should I use WATER-JEL Dressings and when should I use topical gels?
Burn Jel is intended for minor spot burns -- that is, small burns that are
painful, but not necessarily serious. UnBurn was created specifically for the
relief of sunburn pain, and contains vitamin E to help moisturize the skin.
Cool Jel can be used on minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. WATER-JEL Sterile Burn
Dressings are intended for use on burns that may be more serious or which cover
a larger area of the body.
Can WATER-JEL be used on chemical burns?
WATER-JEL can be used on chemical burns which act like thermal
burns. In the case of chemical burns, the protocol for the specific
chemical must be followed
before applying WATER-JEL to insure that the chemical is flushed from the area.
Since the gel is 96% water, it should not be used with chemicals that are highly
reactive to water; additionally, in the case of electrical burns, the power
source should be disconnected before applying WATER-JEL. WATER-JEL should not
be used on “cold” or “freezer burns”.
Do WATER-JEL products have an expiration date? What happens if the product
is expired?
Because we want to offer high quality products at all times, our products
have undergone stability testing to insure the effectiveness for a given
length
of time. The expiration date indicates that the product -- if not opened --
will be stable and effective until that date. WATER-JEL Sterile Burn Dressings
and Fire Blankets have a five year shelf life, and the expiration date can
be found on the label near the
lot number. You’ll recognize it because the letters EXP will appear before
the date. If your WATER-JEL product has expired, then it should be discarded
and replaced. The blanket canisters can be placed in any local recycling program.
The gel, since it is non-toxic, can be disposed of in the regular trash. No
special handling is required.
